Senior IPS officer Dr. Sanjay A. Lathkar (JH-1995) has been appointed as Inspector General (Security) in the Department of Atomic Energy. With nearly 30 years of experience, he will oversee the security of India’s critical nuclear infrastructure, holding the post until his retirement in 2028.
The Jharkhand Government has issued a notification (No. 13/D1-104/2014-2733, dated 07th July 2025) today to relieve Dr. Sanjay A. Lathkar, the Additional Director General of Police (Rail), from his duties. As per the order of the Governor of Jharkhand, he will now join the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) on central deputation to take over the position of Inspector General (Security).

The Union Government has appointed senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, Dr. Sanjay A. Lathkar, as the new Inspector General (Security) in the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). This prestigious position plays a critical role in safeguarding India’s nuclear and atomic infrastructure, ensuring the safety and security of the country’s sensitive and high-value assets. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has officially approved the appointment, as confirmed by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). Lathkar, a distinguished IPS officer from the 1995 batch of the Jharkhand cadre, will hold the position until his retirement on 30th September 2028. This appointment comes with a temporary upgrade of the post from Level 14 to Level 15 in the Pay Matrix for the next two years, aligning the role with that of an Additional Director General (ADG).

A Distinguished Career of Dr. Lathkar as an IPS Officer
Born on 5th September 1968, in Maharashtra, Dr. Lathkar has had an illustrious career spanning nearly three decades in law enforcement. His educational qualifications include an M.Tech in Environmental Science and Engineering from IIT Bombay, along with additional expertise in Law, Management, Cybercrime, Human Rights, and Criminal Justice. Lathkar recently completed his Ph.D., underlining his commitment to continuous learning. Over the years, Lathkar has held several crucial positions in his career, showcasing leadership and dedication in each. Some of his key roles including Superintendent of Police (Latur), Additional Commissioner of Police (Pune City), Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), Maharashtra, DIG and Inspector General (IG) with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), where he led critical anti-Naxal and internal security operations in challenging regions like Gadchiroli, Ranchi, Nagpur, and Mumbai. His expertise in managing law and order in high-tension zones has earned him accolades and recognition across various levels of Government.

In his new capacity as Inspector General (Security) at the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Dr. Lathkar will be responsible for overseeing the security infrastructure of India’s atomic and nuclear establishments. These assets are critical to the nation’s energy and defense sectors, making Dr. Lathkar’s role crucial in protecting them from potential threats.
