Jharkhand targets 4000 MW solar power by 2027 but has achieved only 83.93 MW so far. Major projects like Chandil and Getalsud remain stalled. Despite minor progress in rooftop and off-grid installations, most initiatives face delays, raising concerns over implementation and the feasibility of meeting the state’s green energy goals.

Despite ambitious policies and grand targets, Jharkhand’s solar energy production remains alarmingly low. According to official data, the state currently generates only 83.93 megawatts (MW) of electricity through solar power, just over 2% of its declared target of 4000 MW by the year 2027, as per its solar energy policy.
Many Projects Stalled, Targets Far from Reality
Since the formation of the state, various solar energy projects have been launched to promote clean energy, but most have either seen significant delays or are stuck at the planning stage. For instance, the 600 MW floating solar project at Chandil Dam, which was initiated nearly two years ago, remains incomplete. Similarly, a 150 MW floating solar power plant planned at Getalsud Dam in Sikidiri, backed by the World Bank, has seen no substantial progress despite formal agreements being signed.

Target Breakdown (As per Jharkhand’s Solar Policy)
Solar Parks: 700 MW
Non-solar Parks: 1000 MW
Floating Solar: 900 MW
Canal-Top Solar: 400 MW
Rooftop Solar: 250 MW
Captive Solar Plants: 220 MW
Agriculture-based Solar Projects: 250 MW
Mini and Micro Grids: 110 MW
Solar for Livelihood Programs: 50 MW
Solar Pumps: 120 MW
However, most of these categories show minimal or no implementation so far.

Incomplete Projects
Ground-mounted solar plants were proposed in West Singhbhum (5 MW) and Palamu (9 MW), but neither project has reached completion. In Giridih, which was designated to be developed as a solar city, the planned 18 MW ground-mounted solar plant is still pending.
Rs. 800 Crore Project Also in Limbo
A massive Rs. 800 crore floating solar project is also reportedly on hold, raising concerns about fund utilization and project execution capacity in the state.
What Has Been Achieved So Far?
Despite setbacks, some small-scale achievements have been made:
Off-grid solar systems supplying 3.20 MW benefit 8,000 people across 103 villages.
Rooftop solar installations are generating 62.71 MW, powering 2,500 government buildings and residences.
In Giridih, an 11 MW solar plant has been set up.
Under the carport solar project, 2 MW is being supplied to the Jharkhand High Court.
Airports in the state have installed 3 MW of solar capacity.
A 2 MW canal-top solar plant is operational in Sikidiri.
