A devastating fire broke out at the Amul milk warehouse located in Simuldanga, MGM police station area, early morning. The fire spread rapidly, destroyed thousands of liters of milk, butter, ghee, and other Amul products. According to local reports, the fire is believed to have been caused by a short circuit around 7:00 AM on 5th July 2025.
Firefighters Battled for Many Hours
Upon receiving the call, the fire department swiftly deployed around 20 fire trucks. Despite their best efforts, it took nearly 15 hours for the fire to be fully extinguished. By 9:00 AM, the situation was still critical, with thick smoke visible from up to 5 kilometers away. The intensity of the fire caused significant destruction, with the warehouse building collapsing under the heat. The storage unit, spread across an area of nearly 20,000 square feet, housed various dairy products, including milk, butter, and ghee. The explosion-like sounds from the burning plastic trays and other flammable materials only added to the difficulties faced by the firefighters.
Massive Losses Estimated
The damage to the warehouse is expected to exceed Rs. 15 crore, a staggering amount given the scale of the destruction. Officials mentioned that the presence of dairy products like ghee accelerated the spread of the fire. Fortunately, no employees were in the warehouse at the time of the fire, avoiding any casualties. The warehouse, operated by Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (Amul), was one of the major storage and distribution points for the Kolhan region, supplying milk and related products to the area.

Cause and Investigation
Preliminary investigations suggest that a short circuit might have been the cause of the fire, but the authorities are awaiting a thorough inquiry. The absence of adequate safety measures within the warehouse, with only a few fire extinguishers, contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. The local police and fire department are continuing their efforts to understand the exact cause of the incident. Amul’s management is working to assess the full extent of the damages and will likely take steps to prevent similar incidents in the future. In the aftermath of this massive fire, residents and local businesses have expressed concerns over the lack of fire safety measures in such crucial warehouses.
