Tata Steel has announced plans to expand its public facilities initiatives beyond its official leasehold area in Jamshedpur, covering nearly 125 settlements compared to the 86 listed earlier. The company’s Vice President (Corporate Services), D. B. Sundara Ramam, made the announcement on Independence Day. He also confirmed ongoing talks with the Jharkhand Government over lease renewal. Under the current lease agreement, Tata Steel holds 45 Sq. Km. of command area. However, public facilities or services will now be extended to 65 Sq. Km. to benefit the residents in additional area.
“We are committed to providing basic amenities such as sanitation, waste management, and better road connectivity, not just within our lease area but also in non-command localities,” Sundara Ramam said.

Company is Coordinating with Jharkhand Government on lease renewal.
On lease renewal, the Tata Steel VP said the company has been coordinating with the state Government to reach consensus. “We want our original command area to be restored, but we will fully respect the government’s decision on the final extent of the lease,” he added. Tata Steel had signed a lease agreement in 2005 under which around 1,789 acres, covering 86 settlements, were excluded from renewal. At present, the company controls about 10,000 acres. With Jamshedpur’s population growth and expansion of urban settlements, Tata Steel intends to bridge the civic gaps beyond the leased periphery.

US Tariffs Won’t Affect Domestic Operations
Mr. Ramam also addressed on global trade issues, stated that recent US tariffs on Indian goods would not significantly impact Tata Steel’s domestic operations. However, tariffs on European goods could affect the company’s overseas business. “For our domestic production, the focus remains on improving cost efficiency and productivity,” he said. The company reaffirmed that public facilities and municipal facilities remain a cornerstone of its commitment to Jamshedpur’s residents, with special attention to non-command areas, sanitation, and infrastructure development.
