Transport Halt Pushed Lohardaga–Gumla into Economic Distress
For the last two weeks, hundreds of trucks loaded with bauxite have been standing still near the mines. The sudden stop in transportation has not only hit supply but also disturbed the entire local economy. Roads looked deserted, roadside hotels and tea stalls were shut, tyre shops had no work, and daily wage earners were left without income. Truck Owners’ Association president Om Prakash Singh expressed concern over the situation, said that livelihoods across Lohardaga, Gumla and Latehar have come under threat. He said, “If the administration finds fault in Hindalco’s functioning, action should be taken against the company. But shutting down the entire transport system is unfair.” Eighteen days of disruption in Bauxite transport finally ended, given relief to transporters, workers and small traders in Gumla, Lohardaga and Latehar.
