Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy said thermal power plants across the country have sufficient coal reserves. He was speaking at the launch of the 13th round of commercial coal mine auctions, where 14 blocks have been offered to bidders.
134 Mines Auctioned Since Commercial Mining Reform
Union Minister Reddy said that the Government’s decision to open up coal mining for commercial use has already led to the auction of 134 mines. He said that with electricity demand likely to increase in the coming years, coal production will have to be increased accordingly. He highlighted the situation before 2014 and mentioned that frequent power shortages had forced factory owners in Telangana to strike and farmers to wait till midnight for electricity. “Today, every state enjoys reliable power supply due to record coal production and transformative reforms,” he added.
