Coal India Limited has rolled out a set of welfare measures for its contract workforce employed in subsidiaries Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) and Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL). The decision, taken in a recent board meeting, is expected to benefit around 13,600 workers including 4600 in BCCL and 9000 in ECL.
Salary Paid Through Corporate Salary Accounts
Under the new arrangement, wages of contract workers will now be deposited through corporate salary accounts, following a memorandum of understanding signed with banks. Children of workers will be given concessional tuition fees in company funded schools. In addition, those enrolled in ITIs, polytechnics, engineering, medical and NIT institutions will receive up to 50% support in tuition fees.
Board Approved Housing and Insurance Coverage
The board has also approved linking workers with social insurance schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana and India Post accident insurance. Families will be entitled to OPD treatment at company hospitals, while workers with more than three years of service will be provided housing on nominal rent after depositing a security amount.

Focus on Families and Awareness Drives
Special efforts will be made to improve the educational level of workers spouses, while awareness campaigns will be conducted on issues such as gambling, alcohol and indebtedness. Coal India chairman P.M. Prasad said the initiatives underline the company’s commitment to social security, education and health for contract workers, and their impact will be visible in the coming years.
