A protest for local employment and development was staged on 25th August 2025 at Tata Steel’s Noamundi iron ore mines under the leadership of Zila Parishad member and Adivasi Kisan Mazdoor Party leader Man Singh Tiriya. Demonstrators gathered at the company’s DVC gate, the forest office, and the block development office, where they submitted a memorandum calling for 75% local employment in the mines and provision of basic facilities under corporate social responsibility (CSR).
Protesters Accused the Company for Negligence
Tiriya said that though Tata Steel’s Noamundi iron mines have been in operation since 1907, the region has seen little development. He alleged that local families continue to migrate to Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Punjab, Gujarat, Odisha, and other states in search of livelihood, while jobs in the mines are secured by outsiders. “For generations, the same families have controlled employment while the sons of the soil remain ignored,” he said.

Demands Extended Beyond Jobs
In addition to employment, villagers demanded new PCC roads from Param Baljodi to Kandenala and Badajamda, bus services to connect schools and colleges, medical facilities for local residents, and proper plantation drives in Saranda forest. Protesters also sought increased daily wages for plantation workers, from the current Rs. 300 to 541.
Wider Concerns of Migration and Livelihoods
The protest shown a deep frustration among locals, who said that despite 118 years (since 1907) of mining in the area, their basic needs remain unmet. Villagers said that if employment and development will not reach to their communities, migration will be continue and resentment will grow. The memorandum was submitted in the presence of several local representatives including Sunil Gagrai, Mangal Buruma, Kashinath Pingua, and others.
