Tata Steel CEO and Managing Director TV Narendran on 26th August 2025 warned that Indian steel producers face a stiff challenge from China, which accounted for 54% of global steel output in 2023. He said cheaper logistics, larger production capacities and favourable policies allow China to easily capture international markets with low-cost steel, making it difficult for Indian companies to compete.
Safeguard Duty is Essential on Steel Import
Speaking to reporters after a federation event of metal, mines and engineering employees, Narendran urged the Government to continue supporting the domestic industry. He said that the six-month safeguard duty of 12% imposed on steel imports as a step in the right direction and expressed hope that it would be extended to three years. “It would give relief to Indian players and curb the pressure from cheap imports,” he added.

US Exports are Limited
On the global tariff conflicts, Narendran said Indian steel is relatively insulated due to strong domestic consumption. Exports to the US are limited, he said, by adding that sectors like textiles would face greater impact from American tariffs than steel. He also said that the Indian market continues to absorb the bulk of production, giving companies some cushion against external trade disputes.

He Didn’t Comment on Annual Employee Bonuses
Despite challenges, Narendran expressed optimism about Tata Steel’s growth. He said the company’s ISWP Kombi Mill is in the final phase and will begin production within months. Additionally, the tinplate division is undergoing a major expansion with investments of nearly Rs. 2,000 crores, with new production lines expected in two years. Asked about annual employee bonuses, he declined to comment, smilingly leaving the matter to Tata Workers Union president Sanjeev Chaudhary, drawing a light moment at the press interaction.
