The Coal Ministry has asked its companies to turn old, closed coal mines in Jharkhand into green parks. Earlier, these empty mines were just filled with sand, but now they will be changed into eco-tourism spots with trees and plants. This plan was discussed in a meeting organised recently in Ranchi.
Local Trees to Make Closed Mines Green
Officials said that trees like Saal, Sheesham, Mango, and Jackfruit will be planted in these areas. Earlier, many plants used did not suit Jharkhand’s soil and climate, so they could not survive. By planting local trees, the Government wants to make strong and natural green eco-parks.

Villagers to Help in Maintain the Parks
The plan also provides for the formation of rural committees to maintain these parks, ensuring local participation and ownership. Work has already begun in Hazaribagh, Ramgarh and Katras in Dhanbad, while more closed projects will be taken up after review. Officials said the approach would not only strengthen environmental restoration but also generate employment for villagers.
Parks Linked to Tourism Circuits
To maximise impact, the parks will be connected with existing tourism circuits. The Ramgarh and Hazaribagh parks will be linked with Rajrappa and Itkhori’s Bhadrakali temple routes, while those in Dhanbad will be linked to Maithon Dam. The ministry believes this integration will open new opportunities in eco-tourism, combining heritage with reclaimed landscapes.
