Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand, already known for its coal and mica reserves, is set to add another valuable mineral to its profile as copper deposits have been confirmed in Hazaribagh and Koderma districts. Geological exploration carried out by the Directorate of Geology has revealed significant reserves, and the Government is preparing to auction these mines in the coming months.
New Mineral Hub in North Chotanagpur
According to Kumar Amitabh, Deputy Director of the Geological Training Institute, copper traces have been found in several locations of Hazaribagh, Koderma, and Ramgarh. Survey teams are also working along the Hazaribagh-Giridih border in areas like Ambadih and Munda Devta. Officials said that these findings will soon go for commercial auctions, which will open new chapter in Jharkhand’s mining sector. The region already contributes heavily to the nation’s coal production, and the addition of copper strengthens its status as a mineral-rich belt.

Opportunity for Jobs and Revenue Generation
Copper has been classified as a “critical mineral,” underlining its importance for economic growth and national security. With limited availability and high global demand, the discovery in Jharkhand is being seen as a major breakthrough. Authorities expect that once auctions are completed and mining begins, the state will gain both employment opportunities for local communities and increased revenue generation.
Exploration Underway for Other Minerals
Exploration is also underway for other minerals, including limestone deposits in Giddi and Dadhi, and the revival of mica mines which were earlier categorized as minor minerals but are now considered major. These moves point towards a broader mineral development strategy for Jharkhand, aimed at positioning the state as a national hub for critical and industrial minerals in the years ahead.
