After making gold hallmarking mandatory, the Centre has introduced hallmarking for silver ornaments from 1st September 2025. The decision aims to provide purity assurance to buyers and bring transparency in the silver jewellery market, which has so far remained largely unregulated.
BIS Issued HUID Code
Unlike gold, silver hallmarking will not be compulsory initially. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has issued six purity standards for silver jewellery, 800, 835, 900, 925, 970 and 990. Each hallmarked ornament will also carry a six-digit Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) code, replacing the older system. This will help buyers know the exact purity of the silver used.

Customers Can Verify Through BIS Care app
Customers can verify the authenticity of hallmarked jewellery by checking the HUID on the BIS Care mobile app. Officials said the move would ensure that buyers get the quality they are paying for and would reduce the scope of fraudulent practices in the silver market.

Move Aligned with Gold Hallmarking Model
In 2021, the Government had made hallmarking mandatory for Gold ornaments. The introduction of the same system for silver is being seen as a step towards greater consumer protection and standardisation in the jewellery trade. While voluntary at present, experts said the silver hallmarking regime could also become mandatory in the future, once the market adapts to the new system.
