Hundreds of villagers, truck owners, drivers and labourers staged a protest at Hathi Chowk in Guwa, demanding the immediate resumption of operations at Tata Steel’s Vijay-II iron ore mine. The agitation, led by Block Pramukh Poonam Gilluwa, saw participation from residents of nearly 30 villages in the Saranda region.

Locals Warned Blockade if Demands Ignored
Local leaders including Munda cautioned that if the mine does not reopen before Durga Puja, villagers will be compelled to intensify their agitation through road blockades and Rail chakka jams. They said the mine closure has thrown thousands of families into crisis, with hunger and unemployment spreading across the Saranda belt. Many residents have already migrated to other states in search of work. Truck operators and drivers demanded priority employment for local youth along with implementation of regional development schemes once operations restart.

Minister Assured Action After Receiving Memorandum
During the protest, villagers met Minister Deepak Biruwa who was in Guwa and handed him a memorandum. The memorandum sought immediate restoration of mining activity, local recruitment, and progress in development projects. The minister assured that he would take up the matter with the State Government and concerned departments for an early solution. The agitation, which started in the morning, continues till noon, drew wide participation from Munda, Manaki, block representatives, transporters, and workers, marking a strong collective demand for the revival of Vijay-II mine.
