Union Coal Minister G. Kishan Reddy announced that a joint committee of the Coal Ministry and the Jharkhand Government is working to resolve the state’s pending dues and accelerate the rollout of a new Jharia master plan. Speaking to the media in Ranchi, he said two to three meetings of the committee have already been held, and a decision is expected soon.

Mines Closure and Water Utilisation Plan
Reddy said the Centre is focused on mine closure and sustainable water use in coal-bearing states like Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Goa. Of 143 mines identified for closure, nine have already been shut, and the rest will be completed within the next two to three years. “Mine water will be utilised for local needs, creating jobs and supporting environmental conservation. Funds for this initiative are not a constraint,” he added.

Jharia Master Plan to Focus on Rehabilitation
The new master plan for Jharia will address rehabilitation, housing, health facilities, and education for affected families. The Centre has appointed 50 of the 60-member team tasked with implementing the plan, while the State Government will appoint a CEO before a review meeting with the Chief Minister. “This is a collaborative effort aimed at providing better living conditions and livelihood opportunities for the people of Jharia,” Reddy said.
Safety Measures Against Illegal Mining
Expressing concern over accidents caused by illegal mining, the minister said discussions will be organised with the State leadership to strengthen preventive measures. Coal companies have been directed to deploy technology and reinforce safety protocols to minimise risks.
