Union Coal Minister G. Kishan Reddy announced a significant set of welfare measures and modernisation plans for Coal India Limited (CIL), aimed at improving the lives of mine workers and strengthening safety standards. The minister said CIL will increase the ex-gratia compensation in case of mine accidents from the existing Rs. 15 lakh to Rs. 25 lakh. The enhanced payout will come into effect on 17th September, marking Vishwakarma Jayanti.

Reddy also revealed that Coal India will, for the first time, implement an official uniform policy for its employees from September 17. Additionally, an extra accident insurance cover of Rs. 1 crore for regular employees and Rs. 40 lakh for contract workers will be provided to ensure better financial protection for families of workers affected by workplace incidents.

Focus on Modernisation and Cost Efficiency
Speaking at the inauguration of the newly designed IBM Regional Office premises in Ranchi, the minister said the Government is committed to reforms in the coal sector, ensuring transparency in block auctions and making operations more business-friendly. He highlighted that India saved nearly Rs. 60,000 crore last year by reducing coal imports and is actively promoting domestic production.
Push for Mineral Exploration and Global Partnerships
Reddy also shared that the Government is implementing a National Critical Minerals Mission worth Rs. 32,000 crore to expand exploration of vital minerals. India has already initiated exploration projects in Argentina and Zambia, a strategy to secure raw material supply chains for its energy and manufacturing sectors.
