The Ministry of Coal has confirmed that production from the Parbatpur Central Coal Block will commence soon, clearing a long-standing hurdle in Dhanbad’s coal belt. The assurance came through a written reply by Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy to a question raised in the Lok Sabha by Dhanbad MP Dhullu Mahto under Rule 377.
Joint Development Agreement Signed
According to the ministry, the block has been re-allocated to Jindal Steel (JSWSL) and partially overlaps with ONGC’s Coal Bed Methane (CBM) block. To ensure simultaneous and safe extraction of both resources, a Co-Development Agreement was signed between ONGC and JSWSL on 12th August 2025 in Bokaro. The coal block has been divided into two sections. Block-1 allotted to ONGC and Block-2 to JSWSL for parallel operations.

Mining Lease Process Underway
JSWSL has already approached the District Mining Officer for execution of the mining lease. Once the lease is finalised, coal production will begin, paving the way for re-employment of displaced workers and new job opportunities for local residents. “The delay in production was affecting employment and development in the region. With the ministry’s reply, the situation has become clear. I urge the ministry to expedite production,” Dhullu Mahto said after receiving the assurance.
Industry observers expect the decision to revive economic activity in Dhanbad’s coal belt. The start of production is anticipated to provide direct and indirect employment, restore confidence among workers, and contribute to the region’s overall industrial momentum.
