Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has taken a major step toward streamlining its mining operations by integrating all its mining units under a single umbrella called the Central Mining & Logistics Organisation (CMLO). The newly created vertical will serve as SAIL’s unified mining arm, ensuring a focused approach to raw material security as the company prepares to scale up its crude steel capacity to 35 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) by 2030.

Headquarters Likely in Ranchi or Rourkela
SAIL management is deliberating on where to set up CMLO’s headquarters, with Rourkela (Odisha) and Ranchi (Jharkhand) emerging as the top contenders. The Ministry of Steel has sanctioned the creation of a Director (Mining & Logistics) post to lead the new vertical, and selection of suitable officers is already underway.

This development is part of a broader strategy to strengthen SAIL’s iron ore production, which currently stands at about 34 MT annually, making it the country’s third-largest producer. The company plans to raise this output to 55–60 MT by 2030 to meet the needs of its growing steel capacity. The new vertical is expected to accelerate mine planning, enhance logistics, and deploy modern technology to improve efficiency and grade control.

Aligning with National Steel Policy
The formation of CMLO as a key step towards meeting the National Steel Policy 2030 target of 300 MTPA steel production. By bringing all mining operations under one vertical, SAIL aims to cut costs, streamline operations, and ensure a steady raw material supply for its plants. However, success will depend on timely regulatory approvals, technology upgrades, and skilled manpower. If executed effectively, this initiative could become a model for integrated mining operations and help position India as a global steel powerhouse.
