Operations at Uranium Corporation of India Limited’s (UCIL) Bhatin Uranium Project in East Singhbhum stopped after more than 300 contract workers went on strike on Tuesday. The workers, employed through contractor Geo Tech, are demanding bonus payments and have staged a sit-in protest inside the plant premises.

Production Stalled, Only Emergency Work On
The strike has stopped daily production of around 300 tonnes of Uuranium ore at the project site. Only essential services, mine dewatering, power supply, and first-aid facilities are running with the help of about 20 workers assigned for emergency duty. Plant officials said they are monitoring the situation closely to ensure safety of equipment and facilities during the shutdown.

Workers Stay Firm on Bonus Demand
The protesting workers have refused to leave the plant premises until their bonus demand is accepted. Their decision to hold the protest inside the plant has created additional pressure on management, as uninterrupted production is critical for UCIL’s supply commitments.

Sources said that UCIL management has initiated talks with contractor representatives to find a solution but no agreement has been reached so far. Local union representatives have hinted that the agitation may spread if the issue is not resolved soon, which could impact production at other units as well.
