A day after retiring as Jharkhand’s Chief Secretary, senior IAS officer Alka Tiwari has been appointed as the State Election Commissioner. The Panchayati Raj Department issued a notification today, confirmed her appointment under provisions of the Jharkhand Panchayati Raj Act, 2001.

Her Tenure Set Under Service Rules
According to the notification, Tiwari’s tenure will be four years from the date of assuming office. However, if she turns 65 before completing the full term, she will demit office on that day. The service conditions and tenure will be governed by the State Election Commissioner (Appointment and Service Conditions) Rules, 2001, as amended.

Retirement and Immediate Transition
Tiwari, a 1988-batch IAS officer of the Jharkhand cadre, retired on 30th September after serving as the State’s Chief Secretary. Her farewell was attended by Chief Minister Hemant Soren at the Jharkhand Ministry, where he lauded her administrative abilities and her role in implementing Government policies. During the ceremony, the Chief Minister had indicated that her services would continue to benefit the State in another capacity. Her administrative experience across departments is expected to provide stability and efficiency in managing the commission’s responsibilities.

Administrative Reshuffle Follows
Following Tiwari’s retirement, 1993-batch IAS officer Avinash Kumar took charge as Jharkhand’s new Chief Secretary on the same day. The back-to-back appointments ensured continuity in the State’s administrative leadership, with one senior officer moving into a constitutional role while another stepped into the top bureaucratic position.
