A 27-year-old contract worker, injured in the 28th September molten metal accident at Bokaro Steel Plant’s Steel Melting Shop-2, died during treatment at Bokaro General Hospital on 03rd October. Identified as Brajesh Mahtha from Dumudih village in Chandankiyari, he succumbed to severe burns six days after the mishap. His death sparked grief and anger, drawing villagers, union leaders and political representatives to the hospital.

Public Anger, Political Reaction
News of Mahtha’s death led to a large gathering of villagers and Mahtha community members at the hospital. Dhanbad MP Dulu Mahato and former MLA Amar Bauri visited the site, accusing BSL of negligence. Local Congress leaders demanded immediate compensation, permanent employment for kin, and a judicial probe into repeated accidents. Union leaders alleged workers were being deployed in hazardous tasks without proper training or adequate safety measures.

Company Response and Probe Ordered
BSL’s Chief of Communication, Manikant Dhan, confirmed Mahtha’s death and said a family member has been offered employment under company norms. He maintained that BSL and the hospital “made every effort” to save the injured. Meanwhile, State Factory Inspector Shivanand Laguri launched an investigation into both incidents. The district administration earlier assured strict action against those found guilty within 12 days of inquiry.

Safety Concerns at SAIL Unit
The consecutive accidents have intensified scrutiny of workplace safety at Bokaro Steel Plant, a flagship unit of SAIL. Worker unions and villagers warned that unless urgent reforms are introduced, the plant will continue to risk lives. Questions now loom over whether routine compensation and job offers can replace systemic accountability in India’s largest steel manufacturing hub.
