A Milestone in Gender Equality and Inclusion
Launched in 2019, the ‘Wings of Change’ programme initially allowed women to work in two shifts, setting a precedent for inclusion in core manufacturing operations. Building on its success, the company secured necessary approvals to extend the model to all three shifts. Under this expansion, around 550 women employees will be deployed across 21 departments, compared to 185 currently working in two shifts across eight departments. Tata Steel’s Chief People Officer, Atreyee Sanyal, described the initiative as “a testament to the company’s unwavering commitment to women’s empowerment and inclusive leadership.”

Ensuring Safety, Support and Equal Opportunity
To make this transition smooth and secure, Tata Steel has implemented a robust transport and safety ecosystem. Nearly 20 dedicated vehicles equipped with security marshals, real-time tracking, and SOS-enabled “Suraksha Cards” will operate under a 24×7 central helpdesk system. The company has also deployed a ‘Pink Week Response Team’ for emergency support. Additionally, Tata Steel revised its internal policies to accommodate working mothers, allowing pregnant employees to work only in general or early shifts until their child turns 15 months old, and providing transport for nursing breaks and childcare facilities in all shifts.
