Residents of the Khalari coal belt are facing a new environmental hazard as open trucks and dumpers carrying fly ash from NTPC Tandwa continue to violate National Green Tribunal (NGT) guidelines. The ash, transported through main roads and residential areas, spills along the route, creating clouds of toxic white dust. For residents already battling coal dust pollution, this has become an unbearable daily ordeal.

Trucks Transporting Fly Ash Ignored Environmental Rules
According to local traders and residents, dozens of trucks and heavy dumpers move daily from NTPC Tandwa carrying fly ash without proper covering, resulting in airborne pollution throughout Khalari and adjoining areas. The dust accumulates on roadsides and spreads through vehicle movement, making visibility poor and air unbreathable. Shopkeepers in the KD Market area say they spend hours cleaning their stores every morning, yet fine ash continues to coat their goods and interiors. Residents allege that despite the NGT’s clear directive for eco-friendly transportation, overloading and open dumping have become routine practices.

Toxic Impact and Health Risks Rising
Experts warn that fly ash is a hazardous pollutant containing Silicon Dioxide, Aluminium Oxide, Ferric Oxide, and Calcium Oxide, all known to cause respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular disorders, and even cancer. Long-term exposure can lead to chronic lung diseases and neurological complications. Locals fear that if this unsafe transportation continues, Khalari may soon face a public health crisis. Environmentalists have urged NTPC and district authorities to ensure that fly ash is carried in sealed containers and not allowed to scatter on roads.
