Tata Trusts have reappointed Venu Srinivasan, Honorary Chairman of the TVS Group, as a lifetime trustee, days before his existing term was set to end on 23rd October. The move comes at a time when the Trust is seen navigating a delicate leadership phase, amid reports of two distinct groups emerging, one believed to be aligned with Noel Tata, who took over as chairman after Ratan Tata’s demise, and another comprising long-time associates of the late leader.

The attention within Tata Trust now shifts to Mehlli Mistry, whose term as trustee concludes on 28th October. Sources aware of the matter said opinions are divided on whether Mistry’s tenure will automatically extend or require formal ratification by the board. The outcome is expected to indicate which direction the Trust’s internal balance of power is moving. Tata Trust, which owns 66% of Tata Sons, remains the controlling entity behind the 156 year-old conglomerate that includes nearly 400 companies and 30 listed entities across industries.

17th October Resolution Defined Lifetime Appointments
According to a resolution passed in a joint meeting of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust on 17th October 2024, trustees whose terms expire will be eligible for reappointment without any fixed tenure. The new framework provides for lifetime trusteeship, subject to review upon reaching 75 years of age. Insiders described this as a move intended to bring continuity and institutional stability to the Trust’s functioning.
