Two workers were injured in an electrical flash accident at the Steel Melting Shop–1 (SMS-1) of Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) on Monday afternoon. The incident occurred during repair work inside the area repair section, where a sudden flash of electricity left both men with burn injuries. They were immediately taken to Bokaro General Hospital (BGH), where doctors described their condition as stable.

Accident Occurred During Maintenance Work
According to initial reports, the accident took place while routine maintenance was underway. Devbrat Yadav (36), a permanent BSL employee, and Shaktipad Bauri, a contract worker, suffered injuries to their hands and faces after coming into contact with an unexpected electrical discharge. The sudden flash caused panic among nearby workers, and both injured were swiftly rescued and transported to the hospital for treatment. The plant management has begun an internal inquiry to ascertain the cause and assess whether safety protocols were adequately followed.

District Administration Sought Report from BSL
Following the incident, Deputy Commissioner, Bokaro Ajay Nath Jha took serious note of the matter and directed Chas SDO Pranjal Dhanda to obtain a detailed report from the BSL management and submit it to the district administration. The DC stated that industries must ensure strict adherence to safety norms to prevent recurrence of such accidents. The event has once again drawn attention to the issue of industrial safety compliance within large industrial units like Bokaro Steel Plant, operated by Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), where several similar incidents have been reported in the past.

The latest accident has reignited debate over worker safety in heavy industrial setups across Jharkhand’s coal and steel belt. Trade unions have often raised concerns about inadequate safety audits and maintenance lapses, especially during high-voltage repair work. While BSL management has assured full medical support to the injured and a detailed investigation into the mishap, the administration’s intervention indicates growing official pressure on industrial units to improve safety monitoring and accountability within operational zones.
