The ancient festival of Chhath, deeply rooted in faith and cultural devotion, turned into a major economic celebration this year. According to a study by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), business worth more than Rs, 38000 crore was recorded across the country during the four day festival. From traditional puja items to local sweets and textiles, markets across India witnessed record breaking sales driven by faith, festivity, and the growing appeal of Swadeshi products. According to the CAIT, Chhath Puja 2025 is set to generate a staggering Rs. 38000 crore in business nationwide, a sharp rise from Rs. 31000 crore last year, and Rs. 27000 crore in 2023.

Local Markets Saw Unprecedented Boom
CAIT’s data revealed that Bihar alone recorded nearly Rs. 15000 crore in trade, while Bihar’s markets saw business of about Rs. 15000 crore and Jharkhand contributed close to Rs. 5000 crore. The surge was visible not only in traditional centers like Patna, Ranchi, Muzaffarpur, Purnia and Dhanbad but also in metros such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, where Purvanchali communities celebrated the festival with grandeur. Over 10 crore devotees observed Chhath this year, creating immense demand for goods ranging from bamboo baskets to fruits, sweets, utensils, and apparel.

‘Swadeshi Chhath’ Brought Cultural and Economic Revival
The rise in festive trade was also attributed to the nationwide adoption of the “Swadeshi Chhath” campaign. Encouraged by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for using local products, traders and consumers alike preferred indigenous goods. Artisans making Clay Lamps, Bamboo Soops and Daliyas, Jaggery Producers, and Weavers saw a significant jump in orders. The trend not only revived traditional crafts but also enhanced employment opportunities for rural artisans and small scale manufacturers.

GST Rate Cuts Boosted Post-Diwali Sales
CAIT General Secretary and Member of Parliament, Praveen Khandelwal said that the GST rate reductions announced earlier in 2025 under the “GST Savings Festival” also played a role in the spending surge. Following Diwali, the combined festive sentiment spilled into Chhath, energizing retail and wholesale markets alike. From temporary vendors and transporters to security staff and riverfront workers, the festival created a short term yet sizable employment impact across sectors.

A Festival of Faith and Economic Unity
What began as a regional festival of Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh has now turned into a pan-India celebration, strengthening both cultural and economic unity. The growing presence of Chhath in states like Odisha, Karnataka, Telangana, and West Bengal has transformed it into a festival of national relevance. As CAIT’s ongoing study on India’s “Sanatan Economy” indicates, Chhath Puja exemplifies how devotion, sustainability, and Swadeshi entrepreneurship can together drive India’s inclusive economic growth.
