Underground Coal Gasification Introduced for the First Time
For the first time, the Government has integrated Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) provisions in the auction framework. Of the 41 mines on offer, 21 blocks have been identified with UCG potential, opening avenues for advanced coal utilization and clean energy generation. The introduction of UCG aligns with India’s long-term energy transition roadmap and efforts to utilize deep-seated coal reserves more efficiently. The inclusion of innovative technologies such as UCG is expected to attract strategic investors, modernize the mining ecosystem, and contribute to India’s goal of achieving self-reliance in coal production.
