Member of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) and former Ranchi mayor Asha Lakra, along with NCST chairman Antar Singh Arya, met National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav in Delhi on Wednesday to discuss the poor condition of several highways in Jharkhand. Lakra said villagers living along the Gumla-Ranchi National Highway (NH-43) had complained of severe inconvenience due to the absence of underpasses and cuts in key rural stretches.

NHAI Asked to Prepare Report Within One Month
Lakra informed the NHAI Chairman that villagers from Bedo, Jariya Toli, Sighwa Toli, Jariya Pipar Toli, Nahar Toli, and Purana Jariya Toli are struggling to transport agricultural goods and commute daily due to the unavailability of proper access points on NH-43. She urged the authority to immediately provide underpass and cut facilities for these areas to ease movement and ensure safety. Taking note of the concerns, Santosh Kumar Yadav assured that repair and improvement work on affected stretches would begin soon, and a detailed report would be prepared within one month to address underpass requirements.

Issues on NH-33 and GT Road Also Raised
During the meeting, Lakra also raised issues regarding the Ranchi-Jamshedpur (NH-33), Ranchi-Hazaribag (NH-33), and GT Road near Dhanbad, citing similar complaints from commuters about deteriorating road conditions. The NHAI Chairman assured the commission that necessary maintenance and repair measures for these highways will be prioritized. The NCST delegation said the move is crucial for ensuring road safety and accessibility in tribal-dominated and rural regions of Jharkhand, where highways serve as essential lifelines for local connectivity and economic activity.
