Jharkhand Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Gupta has resigned from his post after the Centre objected to his continuation in service following retirement. Though there is no official announcement yet, sources close to him confirmed the resignation, saying the decision was taken to ease the pressure mounting on the State Government.

Gupta, a 1990-batch IPS officer, was appointed DGP even after his retirement, a decision that drew sharp objection from the Centre, which termed it a violation of service rules in three separate letters to the State Government. The matter also reached the Supreme Court after BJP leader and Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi filed a petition, which the court dismissed, stating that contempt pleas with political intent were not maintainable. Meanwhile, Gupta was not invited to a UPSC meeting related to IPS promotions, signalling a widening administrative deadlock.

Growing Pressure and the Final Exit
Questions were also raised over Gupta’s role in promotion-related decisions of DSP rank officers, further deepening the uncertainty around his extension. With the Centre unwilling to approve his continuation and promotion files stuck due to procedural ambiguity, it became increasingly clear that he could not stay in office without central clearance. Sources indicated that Gupta considered resignation the most practical option to avoid further confrontation between the state and Centre.
