Hindalco Industries has called for strong policy measures to help India’s aluminium sector enter its next phase of growth at a time when demand is projected to double over the next five years. Speaking at an industry event, Aniruddha Kulkarni, Chief Strategy Officer at Hindalco, said production-linked incentives, rationalised import duties on capital equipment, and strict compliance with Indian quality standards will be crucial for the sector to remain competitive globally.

Rising Demand and Structural Opportunity
Kulkarni said that the Government’s Aluminium Vision Document, which projects domestic consumption to rise from 5 million tonnes to 10 million tonnes within five years. He noted that India’s per capita aluminium consumption is just 3.5 kg, far below the global average of 12 kg, leaving significant headroom for growth. He said rising urbanisation, infrastructure spending, and the shift to solar power and electric mobility will further drive demand.

Focus on Quality, Circularity and Digitalisation
Kulkarni mentioned three priorities for the industry — improving product quality through better die access, embracing recycling and circularity, and leveraging digitalisation to cut costs and foster innovation. “If stakeholders work together, the extrusion industry stands to gain immensely from the upcoming demand boom,” he added.

Aluminium’s Role in Energy Transition
Rajeev Kumar, Chief Operating Officer of Vedanta Aluminium, added that Aluminium’s significance extends beyond industry, linking it to India’s energy independence and net-zero goals. “A robust Aluminium sector is vital for global competitiveness and achieving national climate ambitions,” he remarked. Industry leaders agreed that a coordinated push from policymakers and producers could transform India into a global hub for Aluminium manufacturing and innovation.
