Jharkhand is set to get its first 40 kilolitre per day (KLPD) Ethanol plant after the proposed project in Nawadih village under Saraikela PS area received environmental clearance. The plant, to be built at a cost of Rs. 44 crore over 1.2145 hectares, will operate as a grain based distillery under the Centre’s 100% Ethanol Blending Programme (EBP), marking a major industrial addition to the Kolhan region.

Unit to Use Rice, Maize and Heavy Water
Project documents state that the plant will require 90 metric tonnes of broken rice and 102 metric tonnes of maize per day to produce ethanol. The process will also use a mix of industrial inputs including Enzymes, Yeast, Antibiotics, Biomass or Coal, Urea, and Sterilants. The unit will draw 178 kilolitres of water per day, of which 157 KLD will be recycled, with the remainder sourced through groundwater extraction. The estimated power load is 870 kW, supported by a 250 kVA diesel generator.

Part of National Push for Biofuel Production
The project aligns with the Government’s push to expand domestic Ethanol production for fuel blending, aimed at reducing crude oil imports and supporting the agriculture based biofuel economy. Officials said the plant is expected to create employment, support local grain procurement, and strengthen Jharkhand’s industrial footprint in the biofuel sector. With clearance now granted, construction activity is expected to begin shortly, making the Saraikela-Kharsawan district a new node in India’s emerging Ethanol infrastructure.
