Over the past five years, Coal India closed 42 mines, including 30 underground and 12 open-pit. While BCCL mines remain unaffected, several ECL and WCL mines are part of the closure list. Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) saw the highest closure with 18 mines. The Coal Ministry is working under MDO guidelines to reopen these mines and revive operations. These closed mines are now being handed over to private companies for potential revival.
