In a powerful convergence of mining minds, global experts, technocrats, and industry leaders came together in Dhanbad to chart a transformative path for the future of underground coal mining. The occasion was EPPSUM-2025: the International Exhibition on Enhancing Production, Productivity and Safety in Underground Mining which took place on Friday
The event was formally inaugurated by Coal India Limited (CIL) Chairman P M Prasad, who underscored the urgency of innovation in mining operations, particularly in deep excavation environments.
Prof. D C Panigrahi, former director of IIT-ISM Dhanbad, focused that modern technologies must be rapidly adopted to improve both safety standards and operational output in underground mining. He called for a paradigm shift in traditional mining methods to keep pace with global advancements.
Samiran Datta, CMD of Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), reiterated the strategic value of underground mining for securing coal reserves and critical minerals essential to India’s energy and industrial future. “Upgrading the sector requires unified action from all stakeholders,” he said, advocating for collaborative initiatives among research institutions, policymakers, and industry players.
The event not only spotlighted technological advancements but also highlighted the growing importance of sustainability and safety in underground mining as India looks to strengthen its resource security and industrial resilience.
