
Displaced villagers from Mangardaha under the Chirayantand Phase-1 project brought all coal mining, loading, transporting, and underground operations to a halt on Monday, staging a four-hour protest under the banner of the Mangardaha Vishthapit Samiti. The protest came in response to ignored demands first raised in December 2024 and a reminder notice served on 16th June, threatened work stoppage from 23rd.
Hundreds of villagers including Vikram Ganjhu, Birendra Kumar, Kuldeep Ganjhu, Pradeep Ganjhu, Deepak Karmali, Sanjay Karmali, Sanjay Ganjhu, Sovind Ganjhu, Jitendra Kumar, Kariman Ganjhu, Niru Rikson, Matt Bhuiyan, Rupesh Bhuiyan, Santosh Kumar, and Amar Singh gathered to press a wide-ranging list of demands. These included pending jobs and compensation, employment opportunities in outsourcing and underground projects, monsoon drainage systems, repair of electricity poles and wires, construction of access roads to forests, signage on acquired land, displacement and payment certificates, caste and residential proof for students, water supply improvements, repair of water tanks, borewell infrastructure, fruit-tree plantation, playground development, and a community marriage hall.

Following the shutdown, CCL management acted swiftly, dispatching a delegation that met with villagers. The company promised to address the concerns at regional and headquarter levels. Following these assurances, operations resumed after nearly four hours. Villagers have issued a stern warning, if their demands are not met promptly, another protest will be launched.
