This discovery signals a significant step forward in Jharkhand’s mining and geological development. With rigorous exploration underway and future auctions scheduled, Giridih’s evolving role in India’s mining sector deserves close attention.
In a promising development for mineral exploration, two fresh copper deposits have been identified in the Ambadih and Munda Devta areas of Giridih district. This discovery comes shortly after the earlier find of a copper block in Barganda, which is now under Department of Mines and Geology review for auction. Geological teams from MECL (Mineral Exploration Corporation Ltd.) and the state’s Directorate of Geology report that both copper and base metal reserves are present at these newly discovered sites. While the size and commercial viability of the deposits are not yet clear, ongoing exploration efforts aim to estimate the precise reserve quantity.
This marks Giridih as the second major copper reserve location in Jharkhand after Ghatshila, raising expectations of a significant expansion in the state’s mineral portfolio. The Geology Directorate has committed to completing detailed exploration by the end of the year. Once reserve data is confirmed, the government plans to launch an auction process for the mining blocks.

Why This Discovery Matters
New copper deposits could position Jharkhand as a significant contributor to India’s domestic copper production, reducing dependence on imports. Auctions of these blocks may draw both domestic and international mining firms, stimulating jobs and infrastructure in Giridih. Mining activities often lead to better roads, electricity, and community investments, benefitting the surrounding villages of Ambadih and Munda Devta. The upcoming exploration report will offer crucial data on the quality and quantity of minerals, informing government resource management and policy planning.
What Will Be the Next Steps
The Target of the Exploration Completion is scheduled by the end of this year. Reserve estimates will follow preliminary findings. Once quantities are confirmed, the government will prepare the block for auction. The Environmental & Regulatory Approvals are expected before mining operations can begin.
