Amid growing fears of displacement due to proposed expansion activities by Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) in the Guwa mining area of Jharkhand, Member of Parliament (MP) from Singhbhum, Jharkhand Ms. Joba Majhi visited the affected region on 16th July 2025 and firmly declared that not a single family will be displaced without fair rehabilitation. Speaking to concerned residents of Jata Haating Basti during her field visit, Majhi assured them of her full support and criticized the ongoing process as unjust and exclusionary, especially after it was revealed that around 100 families were reportedly left out of the recent survey conducted by the company.
“This entire process is unfair. Until a proper survey and adequate resettlement plan is carried out, no one will be allowed to be uprooted. If needed, I will raise this issue strongly in Parliament,” Majhi asserted.

SAIL Accused of Ignoring Local Families
According to the villagers, SAIL has been attempting to remove long-settled families under the pretext of mine expansion. Despite residing there for decades, many of these poor families were not included in the survey list, sparking anxiety and protests in the community. Majhi, who was accompanied by local leaders from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), said that the people of the region have given their blood and sweat to build SAIL and deserve both respect and justice in return. She warned during her conversation with SAIL Guwa’s Chief General Manager, Bhaskar that If our people are denied jobs and lose their land too, running this mine will become very difficult.
SAIL Promised Fresh Survey and Action
In response, CGM Bhaskar assured the MP that no local unemployed youth would be neglected and that a fresh survey would be conducted to include the families that were left out. He said that the company would take positive steps toward resettlement and employment.
