The Central Government has extended NTPC CMD Gurdeep Singh’s tenure by one year, allowing him to serve until 31st July 2026. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the Power Ministry’s proposal, ensuring leadership continuity at India’s largest power generation company.
The Central Government has extended the tenure of Gurdeep Singh, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NTPC Limited, by one more year. As per the official notification issued on Thursday, Singh will now continue to head the country’s largest power generation company till 31st July 2026. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the proposal sent by the Ministry of Power for the extension of his term. Singh was originally scheduled to retire on 31st July 2025, but will now remain at the helm of NTPC for another year. This extension comes at a crucial time for NTPC, as the organization continues to lead India’s energy transition with its growing portfolio in renewable energy, hydrogen, and green technologies, in addition to its conventional power generation capabilities.

Gurdeep Singh has been instrumental in steering NTPC’s diversification efforts over the past few years. His extended tenure is expected to ensure continuity in the company’s strategic initiatives, including its ambitious targets in the solar and green hydrogen sectors. NTPC Limited, which operates under the Ministry of Power, plays a key role in meeting India’s growing electricity demand. With over 70 GW of installed capacity, the company has also been a major contributor to India’s energy security.
