Senior IAS officer Vinay Choubey, arrested in the Jharkhand liquor scam case, was granted bail by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) court on 19th August 2025. The suspended officer, who has been in judicial custody since 30th May 2025, secured relief under Section 187(2) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
Bail Granted with Strict Conditions
The court allowed bail on the condition that Choubey must inform the court before leaving Jharkhand during the trial and cannot change his mobile number until proceedings are completed. He has also been asked to furnish two personal bonds of Rs. 25,000 each. The court noted that despite 92 days since his arrest, the ACB had not filed a charge-sheet in the case, paving the way for bail. His counsel, advocate Devesh Azmani, argued the plea before the bench.
ACB Took Him Into Custody in May-2025
Choubey was taken into custody on 20th May after being summoned for questioning by the ACB in connection with the alleged liquor scam. Following his arrest, the Jharkhand Government suspended him from service on the basis of the seriousness of the charges. While the investigation continues, his release on bail has renewed focus on procedural delays in high-profile corruption cases and the accountability of investigating agencies.
