Jharkhand stepped towards green growth with the release of Powering Progress, a first kind of high resolution study mapping on renewable energy and storage potential across the State. Jointly prepared by the Government and the Centre for Environment and Energy Development (CEED), the report identified a total potential of 66 GW, including 46 GW from various renewable sources and 20 GW from pumped hydro storage.
Solar Energy Accounted for 41 GW
According to the study, solar power accounted for the bulk of the potential at 41 GW, spanning utility scale projects, rooftop installations, floating solar and concentrated solar. Districts such as Giridih, Ranchi, Gumla, West Singhbhum, Hazaribagh, Palamu, and Chatra were highlighted as high-capacity zones. The report also identified an additional 4.1 GW in hydro, 715 MW in wind, and nearly 1 GW in bioenergy potential. Forest, Environment and Climate Change Secretary Abu Bakar Siddique described the study as a concrete step in Jharkhand’s energy transition, while Industry Secretary Arwa Rajkamal highlighted the need for a robust manufacturing ecosystem to support clean energy deployment.

Roadmap for a Green Economy
The report positioned pumped hydro energy storage as a “game changer” for sustainable growth and energy security, offering stability to large-scale renewable integration. Planning and Development Secretary Mukesh Kumar called for long-term strategies and cross-state learning, while Just Transition Task Force Chairman A.K. Rastogi said the study could serve as a roadmap for transforming Jharkhand into a future-ready green economy. With renewable capacity currently at just 434 MW, officials mentioned the urgency of scaling up investments, policy reforms, research, and public participation to unlock Jharkhand’s clean energy potential and make it a leader in eastern India’s green development.
