Coal India Limited (CIL) has appointed Asheesh Kumar as its Director (Business Development) for a term of five years or until superannuation, whichever is earlier. Asheesh Kumar, who joined Coal India in 1994 as a Graduate Engineering Trainee at Central Coalfields Limited, has over three decades of experience in mining operations, contract management, vigilance, and strategic planning. He played a pivotal role at the Ashoka Opencast Coal Mining Project. He served as as Superintendent of Mines, Senior Mining Engineer, and General Manager, led teams of more than 900 employees and delivered record production levels. Prior to this assignment, he was Officer on Special Duty in the Ministry of Coal, Government of India.

In his board-level role, Asheesh Kumar will spearhead business diversification into emerging energy sectors, coal gasification, critical minerals, and sustainability-linked projects. He will also focus on international collaborations to strengthen CIL’s future. An alumnus of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad with an MBA from BITS Mesra, he also holds a First-Class Mines Manager Certificate. His contributions have earned him the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Award for Excellence in Mining by Coal India Limited.
