Dr. Kacham Anand Rao on assumed charge as the permanent Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL), ended a two-year wait for stable leadership at the country’s only uranium mining company. Rao, an Outstanding Scientist and Head of the Materials Processing Division at BARC, was selected for the post after interviews of eight candidates.
UCIL had been functioning under an officiating CMD, with Dr. Santosh Kumar Satpathy holding additional charge. The absence of a permanent head had slowed decision-making, especially in matters related to new projects, colony infrastructure, and welfare initiatives. Rao’s appointment is expected to bring continuity and stronger direction to the organisation.

Rao will face the immediate challenge of tackling corruption, which has been a recurring concern in UCIL. Improving production efficiency, strengthening the fragile safety system, and reviving new projects are also on the agenda. The condition of workers’ quarters, roads, and UCIL’s hospital services has drawn criticism in recent years, making their improvement another pressing responsibility for the new CMD.
Along with operational matters, UCIL’s social responsibilities are set to test Rao’s leadership. Addressing the long-pending demands of employees, providing basic facilities, ensuring justice to displaced families, and extending welfare measures to local communities around Jadugoda will be vital.
