The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has decided to set up a 3.5 million tonne per annum coal washery on 61 acres of land acquired from the Fertilizer Corporation of India Limited (FCIL) in Sindri. The project is expected to significantly strengthen Sindri’s economic activity and create new employment opportunities in the region. The Coal washery will process coking coal extracted from SAIL’s Tasra project, supplying high-grade washed Coal to the Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) and other SAIL units.

Tasra Project Expansion and Land Acquisition Underway
The ambitious Tasra project, aimed at supporting SAIL’s long-term raw material security, is moving forward with land acquisition already in progress. Sibaram Banerjee, General Manager of the Tasra project, informed that 295 acres are being acquired under the first phase of expansion. The Coal washery, with a capacity of 3.5 million tonnes per year, will be constructed on the FCIL land, making it one of the most modern facilities in eastern India for coal processing.

Rehabilitation Plan for Displaced Families at Asanbani
To ensure rehabilitation of affected families, SAIL has identified 41.11 acres of land at Asanbani in Baliapur block, where a resettlement colony is under construction. After reviewing the progress, Steel Secretary Sandeep Poundrik directed officials to expedite the rehabilitation works and ensure that all construction is completed within the stipulated timeframe. The move reflects the Government’s approach to balance industrial expansion with social responsibility in project areas.

Top Officials Reviewed Project Progress
During his visit, Sandeep Poundrik, accompanied by Additional Secretary and Financial Advisor Ashish Chatterjee, SAIL Chairman Amarendu Prakash, Joint Secretary Abhijit Narendra, Director (Technical) Manish Raj Gupta, and senior administrative officials from Dhanbad district, inspected both the Tasra mine site and the rehabilitation colony at Asanbani. The Secretary appreciated the ongoing development work and urged close coordination among departments to meet project milestones on time.

Sindri’s Industrial Prospects Reviving
Once known for its fertilizer industry, Sindri is witnessing a revival with back to back major investments, first with the HURL fertilizer plant and now SAIL’s Coal washery project. The new washery is expected to not only enhance Coal quality for India’s steel sector but also inject fresh momentum into local industries and employment in Dhanbad district. With the Government’s focus on industrial rejuvenation in Jharkhand, Sindri appears poised to regain its place as an important industrial hub in eastern India.
