Jharkhand’s aviation network has recorded a major leap in passenger traffic, with Ranchi and Deoghar airports seeing consistent growth in annual flyers. Ranchi Airport now handles nearly 23 lakh passengers a year, while the newly built Deoghar Airport caters to over 2.8 lakh travellers. Improved infrastructure, expanding routes, and better connectivity have made air travel more accessible across the state.

Ranchi Leads with Record Passenger Growth
Once limited to a single daily flight in 2001, Ranchi Airport now operates more than 60 flights per day. According to a recent national survey assessing 33 parameters, Ranchi Airport improved its safety score from 4.68 to 4.98, a sign of its rising standards and operational efficiency. Jharkhand now enjoys flight connectivity to almost every major Indian city, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata.

Deoghar Airport Emerging as Regional Aviation Hub
Opened to strengthen air access in northern Jharkhand, Deoghar Airport has quickly become a preferred terminal for both pilgrims and business travellers. Local trade bodies such as the Jharkhand Chamber of Commerce have urged the Centre to expand flight routes to Chennai, Jaipur, and Punjab, and also introduce seasonal direct flights to Goa during the tourist season.

Government Push for Wider Air Connectivity
The State Government has initiated groundwork for a Greenfield Airport at Dhalbhumgarh to serve the Kolhan region. Meanwhile, private airlines have started services from Jamshedpur to Kolkata and Bhubaneswar. Proposals are also underway to begin passenger flights from Dumka, Bokaro, and Hazaribagh, pending DGCA approval, a move expected to further improve intra-state mobility.
