Another accident reported at the Bokaro Steel Plant. Molten iron spilled inside the Steel Melting Shop-1 (SMS-1) unit during the B-shift. The incident occurred while hot liquid metal was being transferred from a ladle to the furnace. Due to a puncture in the ladle, the molten metal started to fall onto the ground.
No Casualties, Ladle Sent for Repair
Plant officials confirmed that no worker injured in the mishap. The faulty ladle was immediately removed and sent for inspection and repair. “There was a minor puncture in the ladle, but there has been no loss of life or property,” said Manikant Dhan, Chief Communication Officer of Bokaro Steel Plant. He added that safety measures are being reviewed and the management continues to work on strengthening safety standards across units.

Previous Incident Still Fresh in Memory
The latest event has reignited concerns about industrial safety within the plant. On 28th September, a similar incident in the SMS-2 department had turned fatal when the pulley of a crane carrying molten metal broke, leading to a massive fire. Three workers were critically injured in that accident, and all three later succumbed to their injuries. The Bokaro Steel Limited (BSL) management subsequently offered jobs to the victims’ family members as part of compensation.

Frequent accidents involving molten iron transfer operations have drawn attention to the plant’s maintenance and inspection practices. Workers and union representatives have repeatedly sought stricter supervision of equipment and more rigorous implementation of safety checks. As one of India’s key steel-producing facilities under the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), the Bokaro unit’s safety record is now under close watch.
