Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has announced plans to establish a 30 MGD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at its Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL). The upcoming project aims to treat and recycle sewage water from both the steel plant and its township, reducing dependence on freshwater from the Damodar River. The treated water will be reused within the plant for industrial purposes, marking a key step towards creating a Circular Water Economy.

The plant will employ Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR) technology, ensuring superior water quality that surpasses the raw water currently drawn from the Damodar River. Once operational, the project will cut raw water withdrawal by nearly 4000 to 5000 cubic metres per hour, rejuvenating the local river ecosystem and saving approximately Rs. 50 crore annually. The initiative will also help the plant achieve its Zero Liquid Discharge goal, meeting NGT guidelines for wastewater management and contributing to improved sanitation standards within the industrial township.

Implemented under Hybrid Annuity Model
The STP project will be executed under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), combining private expertise with public oversight to ensure accountability and quality in long-term operation and maintenance. The work order for the project is expected within the current financial year. By aligning with national missions such as Swachh Bharat Mission, Jal Jeevan Mission, and Namami Gange, the initiative places BSL among the frontrunners of sustainable industrial management in India. On completion, Bokaro will stand as a model eco-efficient township, showcasing how industry and environment can thrive together.
