A protest started at the ABOCP office of BCCL’s Block-II Area in Katras on Monday after the death of 42 year-old clerk Antu Kumar Nonia, whose family and union members staged a sit-in with the body demanding employment and compensation for the dependents. Nonia, a resident of Barora and father of three children, died late Sunday night during treatment at Asharfi Cancer Hospital, Dhanbad, after his health had deteriorated while on duty on 26th September.
Family Blocked Office Gate, Demanded Immediate Appointment
After the post-mortem, the deceased worker’s family, along with union representatives, placed the body at the main gate of the office and refused to move until the management assured them of a job for the widow and monetary dues. The situation escalated, forcing senior officials to intervene. Talks were held between the management and union members in the presence of GM, PO R.K. Sharma and personnel officials.

Wife Given Provisional Job Letter
Following negotiations, BCCL issued a provisional appointment letter to Nonia’s wife, Kusum Chauhan, and assured payment of other statutory benefits as per company norms. After receiving the written assurance, the family lifted the protest and took the body home for cremation. Union representatives, including Bharat Mahto, Utam Kumar Pandey, Gopal Mishra and others, were present during the negotiation.
